Today Sun announced that it closed its acquisition of MySQL AB
, developer of the
world’s most popular open source database. The acquisition places Sun firmly at
the center of the fast-growing global Web economy and gives Sun a solid position
within the $15 billion database market. It also underscores the fact that Sun is
committed to transforming the open source software model into a profitable
business model. New products and support services for MySQL are now
available.
Open Source—Fast and Unfettered
The
acquisition opens new doors for current Sun and MySQL partners. The open source
MySQL database is used by virtually every Web 2.0 and e-commerce company. By
acquiring MySQL, Sun more than doubles its customer list, giving partners access
to thousands of new contacts and potential business opportunities. Sun also
plans to build on the MySQL customer base and drive new adoption through its
extensive channels, including its OEM relationships with Dell, IBM, and Intel.
In
addition, the acquisition gives current Sun partners access to the vibrant MySQL
community, millions strong and known for its passion for scale and disruptive
innovation.
Equally important, now that MySQL is
backed by Sun’s $14 billion portfolio of services and support expertise, ISV
partners have an opportunity to create new software products and value-added
services that incorporate MySQL. And Sun will provide assistance every step of
the way through the Sun Partner Advantage Program.
